ground covered with snow

The Journey Begins...

We’re officially kicking off the journey to design and build our Goryu property, aiming to welcome our first winter guests in the 2026 season. Over the next months we’ll be deep in sketches, samples, and site visits—working closely with our architect and design partners and hopping between showrooms across Japan to get every detail right. Auggie is along for the ride at four months old and, for the record, remains decidedly unimpressed by tile samples.

Right now we’re in concept and schematic design: testing floor plans, selecting finishes, and making the big calls—kitchen layout, bath concept (hello, long soak), window placements for views without losing privacy, and a living space that still feels intimate with friends around a table. We’re narrowing in on fixtures and furnishings after visiting a handful of showrooms; the sample pile is getting serious.

Life with a Tiny Teammate

Traveling between Tokyo and Hakuba with a newborn means more snack breaks than site visits and a strict bedtime for everyone. Auggie’s current contribution is reminding us that a home has to work for real life—stroller in, muddy boots off, and a place to nap after a long morning outside.

The Design Vision

We fell for Hakuba years ago—its quiet after fresh snow, the long valley views, and the calm rhythm of the mountains. Goryu puts us close to the lifts but still lets the house breathe: framed by trees, sheltered from the wind, and oriented for soft morning light. The goal is simple: a place that feels grounded and restorative after a day outside.

  • Nature-first: Wood, stone, and textures that age well and feel good under cold hands after the chairlift.

  • Quiet by design: Layouts that absorb sound, bedrooms that truly rest, and lighting that’s gentle at night.

  • Mountain-smart: Real gear room, boot heaters, snow-friendly entries, and a layout that makes winter living effortless.
